"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by,
and that has made all the difference."
-The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost
Welcome to Banyan Blog!
My name is Mitty and I am an aspiring Cambodian-American writer. I was born in Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge regime and immigrated to the United States with my family when I was five years old. Growing up, I've lived a life in parallel worlds, one foot firmly planted in the U.S., the other slightly touching Cambodia.
My story is like many immigrants that came before me. We came to the U.S. with only the clothes on our backs and the American dream in our hearts. Through the hard work of my parents, our dreams came true. I've been fortunate enough to get a good education in the U.S. (Bachelors and Masters degrees), have a good career working in international development, and blessed with a beautiful family of my own. It seemed like the perfect time to STOP and reflect about what to do with the rest of my life.
I now have the opportunity of a lifetime to have both feet firmly planted in Cambodia to rediscover the country I left behind over 30 years ago. In my journey here, I hope to explore the essence of Cambodia, what it means to be Cambodian and dig deeper into my family roots. Through this blog I hope to share with you what I am learning everyday about this special place, a country full of raw beauty, timeless culture, tragic history and hopeful future.
Follow me to discover a country that is like no other place in this world.
